Juvederm is a type of filler, part of a class of what is known as facial or dermal fillers. It is an injectable filler with a hyaluronic acid base. You may be familiar with hyaluronic acid, as it is a common component in skincare products, typically used to boost hydration and help smooth out lines or wrinkles on the skin. Juvederm is most commonly used to improve visible signs of aging on the face, including wrinkles and fine lines, and it’s also used to give certain areas of the face a plumper look, including the lips. Juvederm is one of the most commonly used cosmetic procedures, and is popular with adults of various ages; it comes from Allergan, the company that also makes Botox. It’s very important that Juvederm is administered by a licensed professional, like the ones on our team at Ageless Radiance.
There are various products within the Juvederm family that are used to give different results, depending on the client and their specific needs and goals. Both Juvederm and Juvederm Voluma are injectable dermal fillers. However, Juvederm Voluma is an injection designed to go deeper into the skin, or dermis. Whereas Juvederm goes underneath the skin tissue, Juvederm Voluma is intended to go deeper into the dermis and sit on top of the facial bones.
Juvederm Voluma is more commonly used to plump or lift certain areas of the face, like the cheeks, areas beneath and around the eyes (orbital troughs), and the lines that extend from below the nose to around the mouth (nasolabial folds). In general, Juvederm Voluma tends to be thicker in consistency, which gives it its unique lifting properties.
Essentially, Juvederm works by going under the surface of the skin, and plumping up the targeted area. Think of it like water pooling into a crack on the sidewalk. By smoothing out and plumping the specific area, it helps reduce visible signs of aging that fine lines and wrinkles can cause, and it can help the appearance look more filled out rather than hollow or bony, as is common when we age. The effects of Juvederm can last between six months to a year depending on the patient, whereas Juvederm Voluma can last two years or more. In either case, repeat treatments are usually needed to maintain results.
Depending on the client and the specific needs and goals, Juvederm can treat most areas on the face, including the lip and mouth area, cheeks, and under the eyes. Since it is a dermal filler, it is most commonly used in areas where a plumping effect is desired, or where facial lines tend to develop and stay, including the lips, under the eyes, and lines from under the nose and sides of the mouth.
Juvederm and Botox are different treatments, and generally have different intended uses and results. When it comes to aging, Botox is typically used to reduce wrinkles, by helping relax the muscles that contract to cause wrinkles, such as the facial muscles used when we smile or frown, for example. There are also therapeutic uses for Botox, such as for migraine headaches or teeth grinding.
Juvederm, on the other hand, is a filler, and works via a different means to deliver results. While both can be used to target aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles, which product you use depends on your personal needs and cosmetic goals. If you want to plump your lips, for example, Juvederm or another type of filler is typically what’s used. At Ageless Radiance, we have a team of licensed professionals that can administer both Botox and Juvederm treatments.
