What is BOTOX?

It is a purified protein derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum – it is not the actual bacteria itself therefore it does not ‘infect’ people. It works by blocking nerve impulses to relax the over active muscle.

It is the most popular non-surgical injection cosmetic treatment in North America. It was approved for cosmetic use in 1990 in Canada- 2001 in the USA. Botox for cosmetic use originated in Vancouver BC in late 1980’s. Botox is quick, safe and highly effective and millions of injections are preformed a year world-wide.

How It Works

Used in a medical setting as an Injectables form from a sterile, purified protein, small doses of Botox block the release of a chemical called acetylcholine by nerve cells that signal muscle contraction. By selectively interfering with the underlying muscles’ ability to contract, existing expression lines are smoothed out and, in most cases are nearly invisible in a week.

Benefits

  • Has been used safely and successfully for wrinkle therapy for 18 years
  • It is simple, quick, and minimally invasive
  • No down time
  • Allows for natural movement

  • Restores a smooth, relaxed, rejuvenated look to the face
  • Short appointment time
  • Used for medical conditions since the 1970’s
  • Use of Botox early in the skin aging cycle can prevent wrinkles
What to expect

Treatment time is 10 -15 minutes, a few small injections in the area relaxes the muscle. Since the treatment only relaxes the muscle beneath the line at the injection site it has no effect on other elements of facial expression. It also has no effect on sensory nerves allowing for normal feeling.

How long does it last?

The effects of Botox last 3 – 4 months, at which time another injection is required. After several treatments the effects often begin to last longer. Repeated treatments are truly anti-aging! Maximum effect of the Botox by 10 days, but may begin to be noticed by day 3.

*Not recommended for use in pregnancy or lactation or in medical conditions that cause muscle weakness.

What areas are commonly treated with Botox?

Most common use of Botox is the deep creases between the eyebrows, forehead wrinkles and crow’s feet around the eyes. Botox can be used to lessen the lines around the upper lip and mouth frown. It is often used to treat “turkey neck” bands or “necklace lines”.

Are there side effects?

Botox has been safely used by millions for over 18 years. There re no known side effects with botox therapy for facial wrinkles. In some cases there can be some temporary side effect such as bruising or pain in the ejection sight. A tiny needle is used to minimize discomfort. Eyebrow or eyelid droop; this is seen in 1-2% of patients receiving Botox and it usually last 2-4 weeks and is mild.

BOTOX for Therapeutic use

Botox has been used for medical purposes for many years. Botox is used for excessive sweating under the arms, palms, and feet. It is also used to treat TMJ and relief of migraine or tension headaches. Costs are covered by extended health benefit programs.

How it works

A small amount of Botox is injected into the effected area. Multiple injections will depend on the area and condition based on the doctor’s assessment. Treatments time can vary from 10 to 30 minutes depending on the area being treated. Effects will take hold in one week’s time. Studies have shown an absence of sweating ranges from 4 to 18 months. Headache relief is experienced by 80% of patients for 3- 4 months.
